The tropical Andes have some of the highest levels of diversity and endemism of anywhere on the planet. New methods and resources, especially time-calibrated molecular phylogenies and distribution databases, now allow us to examine in greater detail what factors are responsible for this remarkable biodiversity. As in virtually all other terrestrial ecosystems, insects dominate species diversity in the tropical Andes. Nevertheless, because of the now well-recognized lack of biological and taxonomic information for most groups, few studies of tropical Andean insect groups have yet been completed. Even among butterflies, undoubtedly the best known large group of insects, there remain many genera that have been historically poorly studied.
